Mohun Bagan Super Giant stormed into the Durand Cup quarter-finals with two consecutive victories in the group stage. On Tuesday, they thrashed South United 8-0, matching East Bengal's 8-0 win in their previous match. The emphatic victory ensured that the Green and Maroons not only remained at the top of the group on points but also moved ahead of East Bengal on goal difference.

Manvir Singh starred with a brilliant hat-trick, while substitute Suhail Bhat netted twice. Defenders Alberto Rodriguez and Rahul Bheke scored one goal each, with the remaining goal coming through an own goal by South United.

Although Sahal Abdul Samad did not get on the scoresheet, he was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance. One of the biggest positives for Mohun Bagan in this year's Durand Cup has been the return to form of both Manvir and Sahal. Last season, the duo struggled for regular game time and found it difficult to maintain consistency. However, they have started the new campaign in impressive fashion, providing a major boost to Greek head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis (Panos).

Speaking after the match, Manvir said that the disappointment of missing out on the Indian Super League (ISL) Shield last season due to goal difference still motivates the team. He added that Mohun Bagan are determined to give their 100 percent and compete for every trophy this season. Manvir also dedicated his hat-trick to his young child.

Head coach Panos revealed that he had asked his players before the match to maintain the right mentality and approach every opponent with equal respect. He expressed satisfaction with the team's attitude but stressed that they must continue scoring more goals.

Looking ahead to tougher challenges, Panos said the comprehensive victory served as ideal preparation. He also confirmed that he plans to rotate his squad for the final group-stage match, giving opportunities to players who have had limited game time so far.

Meanwhile, Australian striker Jamie Maclaren arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday, adding further excitement to Mohun Bagan's squad ahead of the knockout stage.
