Kuggeleijn’s Hampshire Stint Ends Before It Even Begins After Backlash

Xtra Time Newsdesk: Hampshire have withdrawn New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn from their squad after his selection for the County Championship drew strong criticism.

The 34-year-old had been named in Hampshire’s squad for their clash against Warwickshire as the county looked to strengthen its options for the final stretch of the season.

However, his inclusion quickly became controversial because of his previous legal case in New Zealand. Kuggeleijn was charged with rape and indecent assault and was acquitted at a second trial after the first trial ended without a verdict.

Although he was cleared of the charges, his selection prompted a backlash from members of the Hampshire community. The club subsequently reviewed the decision and confirmed that Kuggeleijn would not represent the side.

The development comes at a difficult stage of Hampshire’s Championship campaign. With four matches left and the team battling near the bottom of Division One, the county had been seeking additional strength through an overseas player.

Kuggeleijn, who has represented New Zealand across formats, will now not feature for Hampshire, bringing an abrupt end to a move that had barely begun.
