Xtratime Webdesk: Mumbai Indians are looking to turn the page after a disappointing WPL 2026 campaign. New head coach Luke Williams believes the answer is not a complete overhaul, but a smarter version of what the team already has.
Williams, who guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden WPL title in 2024, has now taken charge of Mumbai Indians after replacing Lisa Keightley. With championship-winning experience behind him, the Australian coach arrives with a clear understanding of what it takes to build a side capable of handling the pressure of a title race.
His immediate focus, however, will not be on dismantling Mumbai's existing structure. Williams wants to retain the experienced core, sharpen individual roles and address the small issues that prevented the team from producing consistent results last season.
For Mumbai, that approach could prove crucial as they look to return to the WPL playoffs in 2027. Rather than reacting to one underwhelming campaign with wholesale changes, Williams believes better decision-making and execution in key moments can make a significant difference.
Injuries, changing conditions and the demands of a long tournament can often force teams to alter their combinations. Williams' priority will be to establish a settled group while ensuring players understand exactly what is expected of them.
A major part of that continuity will come through Harmanpreet Kaur. Despite stepping down as India's international captain in October 2026, Harmanpreet will continue to lead Mumbai Indians in WPL 2027.
Williams has backed the veteran batter's leadership, highlighting her competitive mindset, cricketing intelligence, and composure when important decisions must be made. He sees her as an integral figure in Mumbai's plans as the franchise looks to challenge for the title once again.
For Williams, the mission is therefore less about starting from scratch and more about getting the details right. If Mumbai can convert those tactical improvements into better execution under pressure, their 2026 disappointment could become the foundation for a much stronger playoff push in 2027.
