Thank-You Note Ready: Is Ajit Agarkar Set for a BCCI Goodbye After West Indies Selection?

Xtratime Webdesk: Ajit Agarkar’s stint as the chairman of the BCCI’s senior men’s selection committee is entering its final weeks, with his current tenure set to end on October 4, 2026. Agarkar took charge as chief selector on July 4, 2023, and has now spent more than three years overseeing some of the biggest selection calls in Indian cricket. With his contract coming to a close, BCCI has yet to give any clear word on whether he will continue in the role.

The timing has added further intrigue to Wednesday’s selection meeting in New Delhi. The panel is set to finalise India’s squads for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies, including the three-match ODI series beginning September 27. With Agarkar’s contract running only until October 4, the meeting could potentially be his last as chairman of the selection committee under the current agreement.

There had previously been suggestions that Agarkar could receive a one-year extension. However, as the deadline got closer, there has been no formal communication from the BCCI leadership regarding an extension.

In fact, Agarkar is understood to have prepared a thank-you note for BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, adding another layer of uncertainty to his future. The note suggests he may be preparing for the end of his tenure. There has still been no official confirmation from the BCCI that his stint will end on October 4.

For now, Agarkar remains in charge and will oversee another important selection meeting. But with October 4 fast approaching and no extension announcement yet, the question surrounding the next phase of his association with the BCCI is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
