The End of the Dimi Era? Another Colorful Chapter in Mohun Bagan's History

He may never have become a José Barreto, but much like Sony Norde, Dimitri Petratos won the hearts of Mohun Bagan supporters. The love, admiration, and emotional connection that fans developed with him often brought back memories of the affection once reserved for Barreto.

Now, it appears that Petratos' journey with Mohun Bagan may have come to an end.

His contract expired after the ISL season, and the club management made no move to extend it. After playing what seems to have been his final match against SC Delhi on May 21, Petratos quietly departed.

The Australian midfielder had already sensed what was coming. A few days earlier, he had posted the phrase "The Last Dance" on social media, hinting at a farewell. Before the Delhi match, journalists repeatedly asked him about the post. His response was simple: the match against Delhi would be his final game of the ISL season. He hinted at his departure but stopped short of making an official announcement.

The day before the match, after training, supporters gathered around him, and the emotional bond between player and fans was once again evident. Petratos himself appeared moved by the affection. After playing against Delhi, the Australian footballer quietly left the city.

Petratos arrived at Mohun Bagan in 2022. Prior to that, he had played for top-flight Australian clubs as well as teams abroad and had represented the Australian national team. It did not take long for him to become a fan favorite in Kolkata.

Like Barreto and Sony Norde before him, Petratos forged a special emotional connection with the Green-and-Maroon faithful. During his time at the club, the attacking midfielder scored 28 goals and provided countless assists. His outstanding performances over his first three seasons earned him a special place in Mohun Bagan's recent history.

However, the 2025 season proved difficult. He struggled with fitness issues, leading to speculation that he might not continue with the club in 2026. Although he ultimately remained, he may have found the situation difficult to accept. Determined to prove himself, he worked tirelessly during the off-season to regain peak fitness.

His hard work paid off initially. During pre-season, his performances reassured both the coaching staff and supporters that he was returning to his best. But as the season progressed, the old Petratos never fully reappeared.

Every story eventually reaches its conclusion.

And so, it seems, does the Dimi era at Mohun Bagan.

Yet the place he has earned in the club's history remains secure. His contributions, memorable performances, and connection with the fans ensure that discussions about Dimitri Petratos will continue among Mohun Bagan supporters for years to come. He may have left the club, but his chapter in the Green-and-Maroon story will not be forgotten.
