France head coach Didier Deschamps expressed his frustration with the match officiating after his team's World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, raising serious questions about the referee's ability to handle a match of such importance.
Deschamps specifically questioned the credentials of El Salvador referee Ivan Barton, suggesting that he was not of the required standard for a World Cup semi-final.
"I want to ask one question, though I won't answer it myself," Deschamps said after the match. "Was this referee really good enough to officiate a game of this level? I'm not saying this because we lost, but too many situations throughout the match repeatedly went against us. I'm not talking only about the penalty decision, but several other calls as well. I have nothing more to say. You can ask the questions and find the answers yourselves."
Spain shattered Deschamps' dream of leading France to a third consecutive World Cup final. After guiding Les Bleus to the World Cup title in 2018 and finishing runners-up to Argentina in the 2022 final, France's campaign this time ended in the semi-finals.
The third-place playoff will be Deschamps' final match in charge of the French national team, as his tenure is set to conclude at the end of the tournament. Following his departure, Zinedine Zidane is expected to take over as France's next head coach.
