New Zealand's Jenny Bindon and her son Tyler Bindon have etched their names into football history by becoming the first mother-son duo to feature at FIFA World Cups.
Tyler made his World Cup debut for New Zealand against Iran, marking a historic milestone for the Bindon family. While the occasion was significant, former goalkeeper Jenny admitted that during the match, her focus was more on the result than the record itself.
It was only after the final whistle, when Tyler held her hand and said, "We did it, Mum," that the emotional significance of the achievement truly sank in.
Jenny represented New Zealand in 77 international matches during her playing career. She featured in the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women's World Cups and also represented her country at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. Today, she serves as an assistant coach for the New Zealand women's national team.
Her journey as both a footballer and a mother has been equally remarkable. Just four months after giving birth to Tyler via Caesarean section in 2005, Jenny returned to training. She often brought her baby son to practice, where he would watch from behind the goalposts. As he grew older, Tyler began collecting balls during training sessions and spending time with the players—experiences that helped shape his love for the game.
Although Tyler participated in nearly 17 different sports during his childhood, he eventually chose football as his career. Growing up in the United States, he developed through the LAFC Academy before moving to England. After impressing at Reading, he earned a move to Nottingham Forest and enjoyed a successful loan spell with Sheffield United last season.
While Tyler has had limited playing time at the World Cup so far, Jenny has praised his professionalism and attitude. She believes every opportunity, no matter how small, must be embraced and valued at the highest level.
Jenny also believes New Zealand football has made significant progress in recent years. With more players now competing for top European clubs, she feels the national team's overall quality has improved considerably.
Beyond the historic family milestone, Jenny continues to advocate for greater support for mothers in women's football. She believes creating a more family-friendly environment will help female players balance professional careers with parenthood.
The story of Jenny Bindon's three World Cup appearances as a mother and Tyler's World Cup debut is more than just a family achievement. It stands as a powerful symbol of the growth of women's football and an inspiration for the next generation of athletes.
