Abishek Porel denied bail; will stay in judicial custody for 14 days

XtraTime Newsdesk: On Friday, August 14, 2026, the Chinsurah Court denied bail to Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel following his arrest on rape charges. The court ordered the 23-year-old cricketer to be remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, where he will remain until the next hearing.

The Mogra Police arrested Porel in Kolkata on August 11, acting on directives from the Calcutta High Court after the complainant approached the bench. The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged on June 23 by a medical student pursuing her studies in Karnataka. She alleged that Porel engaged in a physical relationship with her under the pretext of marriage, alongside accusations of misconduct, illegal confinement, assault, and criminal intimidation. Upon his initial court appearance on August 11, he was remanded to police custody for three days.

According to police sources, Porel and the complainant had been in a relationship for approximately three and a half years, during which they travelled abroad together and planned to marry. While a dispute between the two had drawn police attention about a year and a half prior, no formal First Information Report (FIR) was filed at that time. Following the June complaint, local authorities made multiple attempts to locate Porel at his Chandannagar residence before executing the arrest in Kolkata.

Porel was presented back in court on Friday after his initial police custody period expired. Following the hearing, the court rejected his bail application and transferred him to judicial custody. The case will now proceed through the legal system alongside the ongoing police investigation.

As a prominent young talent, Porel has represented Bengal in domestic circuits and established himself as a regular top-order fixture for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This high-profile legal battle has now cast severe uncertainty over his immediate cricketing career.
