Dhoni’s CSK stake bid denied; Former captain’s influence still remains strong
Recent reports suggested that Dhoni had expressed an interest in buying a larger stake in CSK

XtraTime Webdesk: Mahendra Singh Dhoni may not be looking to increase his ownership share in Chennai Super Kings, but the former captain continues to hold a small financial stake in the franchise while remaining an important voice in its major decisions.
Recent reports suggested that Dhoni had expressed an interest in buying a larger stake in CSK. However, a senior franchise official has now denied that any such discussion took place, either with Dhoni or with former CSK chief N Srinivasan.
Dhoni, however, is already a shareholder in the franchise. According to the latest information, he owns more than one lakh CSK shares, acquired through private transactions. While that makes him a shareholder, his holding remains only a tiny portion of the overall shareholding, with the Srinivasan family continuing to control more than 55 per cent of the company.
The bigger talking point, though, is Dhoni’s continued influence at CSK.
After stepping down as captain and missing the entire 2026 IPL season, Dhoni is still involved in the franchise’s planning for the future. His biggest responsibility at present is to decide the next head coach following Stephen Fleming’s departure. CSK have not officially confirmed their next coach, although reports indicate that an overseas candidate is being considered.
Dhoni is expected to return around September 22, after which the CSK management could hold discussions on the coaching appointment, transfers and trades.
So, while the ownership story may have been denied, Dhoni’s role inside CSK has clearly not disappeared. He may no longer be the captain on the field, but his opinion continues to carry considerable weight when the franchise plans its next chapter.
