Xtratime Webdesk: With India’s two-Test series against New Zealand approaching, the focus has shifted towards getting key players ready for the demands of red-ball cricket. The India A setup is set to play an important role in that preparation, with Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy lined up for four-day assignments.
Siraj, one of India’s leading fast-bowling options in Test cricket, will join India A for the second four-day match against New Zealand A, beginning on October 31. The move is aimed at giving the pacer valuable time in the longer format before the senior Test squad begins its campaign.
For a fast bowler, the transition from limited-overs cricket to Tests can be significant. Bowling long spells, managing workload and maintaining rhythm over several days require a different level of preparation. Siraj’s India A stint therefore offers him an opportunity to build that rhythm in competitive conditions rather than heading into the Test series without a recent red-ball game.
Nitish will follow a slightly different route. He is expected to feature in India’s opening ODI against New Zealand on November 4 before moving to the India A camp for the third four-day fixture, starting November 7. The all-rounder will get another opportunity to work on his batting and bowling in conditions closer to what he will encounter in Test cricket.
There is also a fitness angle surrounding Prasidh Krishna. The pacer has been ruled out of the ODI series with a hamstring injury, but his Test prospects could remain alive if he clears his return-to-play assessment. A possible India A appearance would give him a chance to demonstrate his match fitness.
With the New Zealand Tests starting on November 19, these India A fixtures could prove more than just practice games. They offer India a controlled platform to assess workload, form and fitness while giving players a final red-ball audition before the Test squad takes centre stage.
