Where has that cricketing relationship between India and Bangladesh vanished?

Where has that cricketing relationship between India and Bangladesh vanished?

Today, one story keeps coming back to mind—the unforgettable moment shared by Mohammad Ashraful and Sachin Tendulkar. It was a different era. An era filled with warmth, admiration and a genuine cricketing bond between India and Bangladesh.

But where has that relationship gone? How did things change so drastically? Why has India-Bangladesh cricket reached a stage where Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal has to personally take the initiative to revive bilateral cricket with India? The impact of political uncertainty has clearly extended far beyond diplomacy and into the game itself.

There was a time when the cricketing relationship between the two neighbours was built on mutual respect and affection. One of the most heartwarming examples was when Mohammad Ashraful showed Sachin Tendulkar a photograph from his childhood. Ashraful, then a young ball boy, had posed with the Indian legend during one of India's tours of Bangladesh. Years later, after becoming Bangladesh captain, Ashraful proudly showed that same photograph to Tendulkar, telling him that he had grown up idolising him. It was a touching reminder of how deeply Indian cricket had inspired an entire generation of Bangladeshi cricketers.

The admiration was never limited to Sachin alone. Bangladeshi players held immense respect for Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. Ganguly, in particular, enjoyed extraordinary popularity across Bangladesh, where fans embraced him with affection that went beyond national boundaries.

Today, however, those memories seem like stories from another time. The warmth, trust and camaraderie that once defined India-Bangladesh cricket appear to have faded under the shadow of political tensions.

That is precisely why former Bangladesh captain and current BCB President Tamim Iqbal is now making a determined effort to ensure that the Indian cricket team returns to Bangladesh for a bilateral series in September. India have not toured Bangladesh for a bilateral assignment since 2022, and restoring that cricketing connection has become more important than ever.

Cricket has always had the power to unite people beyond borders and politics. The hope now is that the sport can once again become a bridge between the two nations, rekindling a relationship that once stood as a symbol of mutual respect, friendship and shared passion.
