In a surprising turn of events, FIFA has suspended the one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun, making him eligible to play in the Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

The decision comes after Balogun was sent off during the United States' match against Bosnia for a reckless challenge on Tarik Muhabemovic, catching the defender on the ankle. The referee showed Balogun a straight red card, and under normal circumstances, such dismissals automatically result in a one-match suspension with no right of appeal.

However, FIFA announced that the sanction has been suspended on a one-year probationary basis.

In an official statement, FIFA said:

"The enforcement of the match suspension has been suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Balogun commits a similar offence during this period, the suspended sanction will automatically take effect, in addition to any disciplinary action arising from the new incident."

The decision has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning how Balogun has been cleared to play despite the standard rule that direct red-card suspensions cannot be appealed. FIFA has defended its stance, explaining that its Disciplinary Code allows the governing body to suspend the enforcement of certain sanctions under specific circumstances.

A similar precedent was set in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, who had previously received a three-match suspension, with two of those matches later suspended under a comparable disciplinary provision.

The controversy intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly welcomed FIFA's decision on social media. Trump thanked the world governing body for what he described as "correcting an injustice," further fueling discussion around the ruling.

With the FIFA World Cup entering the knockout stage, the decision has become one of the tournament's biggest talking points, raising fresh questions about consistency and transparency in FIFA's disciplinary process.
