What a comeback! What a fight! East Bengal produced a remarkable turnaround at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, coming from behind to beat Kuwait’s Al Arabi 4-1 and secure their place in the main round of the AFC Champions League Two.

Very few would have predicted such a result before kick-off. Habas’ side entered the game facing several challenges, with injuries and fitness concerns affecting the squad. East Bengal were also allowed to field only two foreign players in the starting XI, while Al Arabi had five foreign players. Yet once again, the Red and Gold Brigade showed why they can be such a dangerous opponent for foreign teams.

It was another memorable night at the Salt Lake Stadium, reminiscent of their famous 6-0 demolition of Iraq’s Al Zawraa. This time, the Kuwait Premier League runners-up were on the receiving end.

Both teams played attacking football in the first half, but neither side could establish control on a heavy pitch. Prabhsukhan Gill made a couple of important saves to keep East Bengal in the contest.

The match truly came alive after the break. Al Arabi were awarded a penalty after Sandeep Mandi committed a foul inside the box, and they converted from the spot to take the lead.

East Bengal immediately went in search of an equaliser. Rashid delivered a pinpoint free-kick, and Joy Gupta rose brilliantly to head the ball home and make it 1-1.

The score remained level after 90 minutes, but the final 15 minutes turned into an extraordinary display of attacking football from East Bengal.

First, a superb drop volley put East Bengal 2-1 ahead. David then showed tremendous composure and maturity to make it 3-1. Finally, Rohit Danu completed the rout, converting from David’s pass to make it 4-1.

Rashid once again demonstrated how valuable his presence can be in midfield, while substitute Ekonimidis also made an encouraging impact during his brief appearance.

Above all, East Bengal’s defence deserves enormous credit for keeping Al Arabi under control for long periods. The Kuwait side had been heavily hyped before the match, but ultimately failed to live up to expectations.

That, however, takes nothing away from East Bengal’s achievement. They not only secured their place in the AFC Champions League Two main round, but also produced a stunning final 15 minutes that could provide a huge boost of confidence and momentum for the rest of the season.
