Xtratime Webdesk: Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to turn their attacking dominance into goals when they face Chennaiyin FC in their next Indian Super League encounter, with head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis demanding greater efficiency in front of goal.
The Mariners have created plenty of opportunities this season but have not always been rewarded for their attacking efforts. Dilmperis remains committed to his side’s philosophy of possession, attacking intent and creating chances, but stressed that those opportunities must now be converted.
“Our basic principles are the priority for us as Mohun Bagan. We want the possession, we want to hold the ball to our feet, create, bring the ball close to the box of the opponent, create chances and opportunities and, of course, score a goal,” he said.
The coach pointed to a recent game in which Mohun Bagan registered 26 attempts without scoring, insisting that such profligacy cannot continue if the team wants maximum points. “When you do 26 attempts, you cannot have zero goals. You should have at least three or four goals,” he stressed.
Dilmperis also confirmed that Jamie Maclaren remains under assessment following his hamstring concern, while Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia) fell ill after the Delhi game. Their availability will be decided after training, with the club taking a cautious approach rather than rushing either player back.
The recent international break has also provided valuable experience to the squad. Anirudh Thapa, who featured for India against stronger opponents, believes facing stronger opposition has improved the players’ confidence and can now help Mohun Bagan approach the ISL with greater belief.
Thapa also stressed that the responsibility for scoring cannot rest on one player. “Everyone has that quality to score goals, to create chances,” he said, pointing to the attacking contributions possible from across the squad.
The midfielder further called for greater opportunities for young Indian footballers, arguing that regular club exposure from the age of 16 or 17 can create a stronger pathway towards senior-level football.
With Dilmperis demanding sharper finishing and Thapa backing the squad’s collective quality, Mohun Bagan will aim to make their chances count and secure a crucial win against Chennaiyin.
