India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu created history by winning her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the women's 48kg weightlifting event. Dominating the competition from start to finish, Chanu comfortably outperformed all her rivals to retain her title. Overcome with emotion, she broke down in tears as India's national anthem played during the medal ceremony.
In the snatch event, Chanu attempted the highest opening weight of 82kg but failed on her first try. She successfully lifted the same weight on her second attempt before raising the bar to 85kg, which she also cleared with ease on her third attempt.
In the clean and jerk, Chanu once again opened with the highest weight of 105kg. Although she was unsuccessful on her first attempt, she made a strong comeback by lifting 105kg on her second try, a successful effort that secured the gold medal and placed her well beyond the reach of her competitors.
Chanu's triumph also marked India's first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games. At that stage of the competition, India's medal tally stood at one gold, one silver, and one bronze.
