State Athletics Championships begin; three meet records set on the very first day

The opening day witnessed three new meet records. In the Women's Under-20 javelin throw, Jalpaiguri's Tanushree Haldar set a new championship record. Priya Biswas created a new meet record in the Women's Under-16 long jump, while Jalpaiguri's Dabloo Roy established a new record in the Men's Under-23 triple jump.

The 74th State Athletics Championship has officially begun at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex in Kolkata, bringing together 1,423 athletes from across the state. The participants include 818 men and 605 women, competing in 39 events across 12 age-group categories.

The opening ceremony on Friday was attended by West Bengal's Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Dr. Indranil Khan, Padma Shri awardee and Olympian Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, and Arjuna Award recipient Saraswati Saha.

The opening day witnessed three new meet records. In the Women's Under-20 javelin throw, Jalpaiguri's Tanushree Haldar set a new championship record. Priya Biswas created a new meet record in the Women's Under-16 long jump, while Jalpaiguri's Dabloo Roy established a new record in the Men's Under-23 triple jump.

East Bengal Club dominated the prestigious 100m finals. Saurabh Saha clinched the gold medal in the men's event, while Tamashree Mishra emerged victorious in the women's category.

The championship is expected to serve as a platform for identifying the next generation of athletes who could go on to represent India at the national and international levels.
