India’s 15-year wait for a medal in women’s doubles at the Badminton World Championships has finally come to an end. Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured a medal by reaching the semi-finals after defeating a Chinese pair in the quarter-finals.
The Indian duo produced a remarkable comeback in a 69-minute battle, overcoming a poor start to win 16-21, 21-15, 21-13. Their victory is particularly significant as India’s last medal in the women’s doubles event came in 2011, when Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won a bronze medal.
Trisa and Gayatri initially struggled and lost the opening game, but they showed tremendous fighting spirit to turn the match around. They dominated the second game before maintaining their momentum in the decider to seal a memorable victory.
The Indian pair have previously enjoyed success on the international stage. They reached the semi-finals of the All England Open Badminton Championships in consecutive years, 2022 and 2023. They also won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
An injury to Trisa earlier this year had threatened to disrupt their progress, but the duo made a superb comeback. Their latest achievement at the World Championships marks another major milestone in their careers and has ended India’s long wait for a women’s doubles medal at the prestigious tournament.
