He came, he saw, and he conquered! That phrase perfectly sums up Manav Suthar’s stunning start to Test cricket. The young left-arm spinner has taken the ongoing Galle Test by storm. After claiming four wickets in the first innings, Suthar produced an even more remarkable performance in the second, picking up six wickets. He saved his best for the final moments, taking four wickets in just 10 balls and leaving Sri Lanka stunned.
After making an impressive Test debut against Afghanistan, Suthar arrived in Galle with expectations rising. He responded in style, announcing himself as one of the most exciting young spin talents in Indian cricket. With his performances, Suthar has shown that he could become the next big name in India’s long tradition of left-arm spin.
Born in 2002 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, near the Pakistan border, Suthar grew up in a sporting environment. His father, Jagdish Suthar, is a physical education teacher and a passionate cricket enthusiast. Determined to help his son fulfil his dreams, he enrolled Manav in a cricket academy when he was just 11.
Interestingly, Suthar initially started out as a batter. His father also dreamed of seeing him become a successful batsman. But coach Dheeraj Sharma quickly recognised Manav’s natural ability as a left-arm bowler and advised his father to focus on developing that talent.
From a young age, Suthar displayed remarkable discipline. He would leave home in the morning, complete his practice and return only in the evening. Day after day, he worked on bowling in the same areas, developing his flight, drift and spin and gradually creating his own unique style.
His breakthrough came in the Ranji Trophy, where he grabbed attention by taking 39 wickets in just six matches. Opportunities soon followed. In 2023, he earned a place in India’s Emerging Asia Cup squad, while his batting ability also continued to attract attention.
In 2024, Suthar entered the IPL arena with Gujarat Titans. Now, his international performances are creating an even bigger buzz.
The Galle Test has made one thing clear: Manav Suthar is not just a promising youngster—he is a potential future star. Indian cricket may have found another spinner ready to carry forward the legacy of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
