XtraTime Newsdesk: Philadelphia witnessed a dominant French performance as Les Bleus defeated Iraq 3-0 in their Group I clash, sealing their place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
The match, however, was far from ordinary. Play was suspended for over two hours at halftime due to a severe thunderstorm and lightning near the stadium. But the weather delay did little to cool down Kylian Mbappé. The French captain opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a stunning long-range strike, and after the resumption, he doubled his tally in the 54th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from the Iraqis.
Ousmane Dembélé put the result beyond doubt in the 66th minute, finishing off a clever pass from Michael Olise to make it 3-0. It was a fitting reward for a French side that controlled possession and created chances at will against an Iraqi team that struggled to cope with the pace and technical quality of their opponents.
For Iraq, this was a second consecutive loss, officially ending their World Cup journey. Meanwhile, France now sit comfortably at the top of Group I with six points. The victory also carried personal significance for Mbappé, whose brace took his career World Cup tally to 16 goals, moving him into second place on the all-time scoring list behind only Lionel Messi. With their place in the knockout phase secured, France will look to maintain their momentum in the final group game.
