Ghanaian Witch Doctor Makes News After Cursing and Uncursing England Striker Harry Kane

XtraTime Newsdesk: 2026 is a strange year. South Africa has gone to the knockout stages of the World Cup, the New York Knicks have won the NBA title, Arsenal has won the Premier League title(!!),East Bengal has won the ISL title(!!!!!!) and people have again begun to believe in witch doctors and astrologers. We, sports fans, are a superstitious lot.

Sometimes, we don’t even move an inch from where we are sitting if our team is winning but a lot of rational people might say believing in a “witch doctor”/”spiritualist” is too much but sometimes it’s not a co-incidence when things just happen according to the way “the doctor” wants.

But this begs a question as to why are we talking about “witch doctors” here suddenly? Well, England striker Harry Kane was apparently “cursed” by one.  That was the claim made by Ghanaian “spiritualist/witch doctor” Nana Kwaku Bonsam.

As you all know, Ghana stopped a very stacked English team at its tracks and kept the score 0-0. They attained a valuable point and are probably on the verge of qualifying for the Round of 32. It absolutely felt like nothing was going in for England. Kane was close to getting one during the 86th minute but missed it. It made those claims of a “curse” go viral.

"I was waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way," Kane, 32, later said. "It did and I just couldn't quite get over the ball. But I've been a striker long enough to know they don't always go in."

Now, he has claimed that he has released Kane from his spell after the match with Ghana was over. "Now I am going to release Harry Kane so that, in his next match, he can score,” Bosam said in an Instagram post shortly after the match ended in a draw. “Harry, I will come and visit you. Don't be offended. We are friends."

He also said in an interview with LBC that he would name his son, Harry Kane and that he had no particular enmity with him as the England front-man was one of his favourite players.

“Witch doctors/spiritualists” are still prevalent in some regions of Africa especially Ghana. There have been incidents attributed to witch doctors intervening in those events. One of the examples being in Kenya when a lot of anti-government protestors felt disoriented and the blame fell on witch doctors doing their work on behalf of President William Ruto.

Belief is high among many rural communities in West Africa and Ghana is no exception. People still go to these practitioners for treating whatever ailments they have.

Hence, it’s not a surprise that such a figure still exists in Ghana. Whether Kane was actually cursed or not, only the next match can tell.
