This Pakistan Cricket Star Has Just Become A British Citizen; Could Play IPL Next Year

XtraTime Newsweek: Former Pakistani bowler Mohammad Amir has gained popularity since becoming a British citizen. Amir, who originally joined The Hundred draft as a foreign player, now plays for Trent Rockets as a domestic player in the UK tournament. With the legal processes for his British citizenship fulfilled, many supporters are questioning if he may now play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pakistani players are currently barred from participating in the IPL due to strained relations between the two countries, but Amir is now eligible to register under league regulations.

Recently, the left-arm fast bowler was asked about his future ambitions, including the potential of playing in the IPL. Amir underlined that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) remains his top focus, and he has still to decide whether to play in the IPL.

"I will play in the PSL in 2027 as an overseas player. As for the IPL, I don't know yet whether I will participate," said Amir.

For those unfamiliar, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood competed in the IPL from 2012 to 2015. Mahmood, like Amir, earned British citizenship and was later signed by Punjab Kings. He also played a few matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Amir confirmed his retirement from international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup, capping up a 36-Test, 61-ODI, and 62-T20I career for Pakistan.

Amir is regarded as one of his generation's best left-arm fast bowlers, and he is still in high demand in franConcerns were raised earlier in July, prior to Amir's formal signing with the Trent Rockets. According to ESPNcricinfo, some critics suggested that he should not have been permitted to participate as a local player in The Hundred despite enrolling for the draft as an international player.

They argued that, under those conditions, most teams, with the exception of those looking for injury replacements, would be unable to sign him.

However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) authorised the move, claiming that Amir now fits the eligibility standards to be categorised as a domestic player and hence is permitted to participate in that capacity.chise competitions throughout the world.
