A red card, two penalties, relentless attacking football, momentum swings, and a heroic performance from Jude Bellingham combined to produce a World Cup thriller as England edged Mexico 3-2 to book their place in the quarter-finals.

For much of the opening half-hour, however, England struggled to impose themselves. Mexico's fluid passing and relentless pressing forced the Three Lions deep into their own half, although England's disciplined defensive structure prevented clear-cut chances.

Bellingham Changes Everything

Then, almost out of nowhere, the match turned on its head.

England suddenly found another gear, and Jude Bellingham delivered two devastating blows in the space of just two minutes.

In the 36th minute, Bukayo Saka floated in an inviting cross from the right. Mexico's defenders were preoccupied with Harry Kane, leaving Bellingham completely unmarked at the far post. The midfielder took full advantage, powering home a flying header to give England the lead.

The closing minutes of the first half belonged entirely to Mexico.

Jiménez squandered a golden opportunity before forcing Jordan Pickford into a superb diving save with a powerful header. Moments later, Bellingham produced another crucial contribution, clearing off the line from César Montes inside the six-yard box to preserve England's lead.

Red Card Sparks More Drama

The second half began with yet another dramatic twist.

Konsa was shown a red card early after the restart, leaving England to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

Tuchel immediately reshuffled his side, replacing Saka with John Stones to reinforce the defence.

Yet England struck again.

Anthony Gordon raced through on goal and was brought down by Mexico's goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation, earning England a penalty. Kane calmly converted from the spot to restore a two-goal cushion at 3-1.

The drama was far from over.

Mexico were awarded a penalty of their own after Kane was penalised for fouling a Mexican attacker inside England's box. Jiménez made no mistake from the spot, reducing the deficit to 3-2 and setting up a tense finale.

England Hold Firm

With numerical superiority, Mexico launched wave after wave of attacks during the closing stages.

High balls continuously rained into England's penalty area as Aguirre's side searched desperately for an equaliser. But England's aerial dominance proved decisive.

Pickford commanded his area superbly, while Stones marshalled the defence with authority. Every Mexican attack was repelled as England showed remarkable resilience to protect their narrow advantage.

After a courageous performance, Mexico's World Cup journey came to an end despite pushing one of the tournament favourites to the limit.

Quarter-final Awaits

England now move into the quarter-finals, where an even tougher challenge awaits.
