Do Messi and Ronaldo escape punishment? Heated debate over Balotelli's red card

The United States booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the result has been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun's red card.

Balogun, who found the back of the net during the match, was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge. The dismissal has since become the biggest talking point, with many questioning whether football's biggest stars are treated differently by match officials.

Former United States international Alexi Lalas reignited the debate while speaking on Fox Sports. According to Lalas, Balogun would not have been sent off if he had been one of the game's biggest names.

"If Balogun's name was Lionel Messi, he wouldn't have seen a red card," Lalas said, claiming that referees often overlook similar incidents involving superstar players while punishing others more harshly.

The discussion has also brought Cristiano Ronaldo's past disciplinary case back into focus. During the World Cup qualifiers, Ronaldo was handed a three-match suspension following an incident against the Republic of Ireland. However, two of those matches were later suspended, allowing him to remain available for the World Cup.

Balogun's dismissal means he will miss the United States' Round of 16 clash against Belgium, dealing a significant blow to head coach Mauricio Pochettino's plans.

The incident has fuelled fresh debate across the football world, with fans and pundits questioning whether elite players such as Messi and Ronaldo receive more lenient treatment than others for similar offences. Whether Balogun's red card was justified or not, the controversy has once again raised concerns over consistency in refereeing at the highest level of the game.
