Norway's Dream Run Ends as England Reach the World Cup Semi-finals

Norway's impressive World Cup journey came to an end as England booked their place in the semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory after 120 minutes. Jude Bellingham emerged as the match-winner, scoring both goals for the Three Lions. Norway had taken the lead through Andreas Schjelderup, but England's experience and resilience ultimately proved decisive. Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and company now march into the last four.

England lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Harry Kane leading the attack and Jude Bellingham operating just behind him. Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon occupied the flanks, while full-backs Ezri Konsa and Nico O'Reilly frequently pushed forward as Norway adopted a defensive approach from the outset. England dominated possession in the opening stages, patiently circulating the ball around the Norwegian penalty area and maintaining sustained pressure.

Norway's tactical focus was clear. By deploying two defensive midfielders, they aimed to deny Bellingham space between the lines and disrupt the connection between him and Kane. The strategy worked effectively for long spells, preventing England from converting territorial dominance into clear-cut chances. Captain Martin Ødegaard shouldered the responsibility of orchestrating Norway's play from midfield whenever they managed to break forward.

After absorbing England's pressure for the opening 25 minutes, Norway appeared to realize they had perhaps shown their opponents too much respect. They gradually became more adventurous and began testing England's defence. Erling Haaland came close on two occasions—once failing to make proper contact with the ball and later directing a header straight at Jordan Pickford. Those moments served as a warning.

The breakthrough soon followed. Andreas Schjelderup cut in from the left and, from a difficult angle, fired a superb finish into the far corner. There were appeals that Harry Kane had been fouled in the build-up, but while some referees might have awarded a free-kick, the official was justified in allowing play to continue.

Norway's increased attacking ambition inevitably left more space at the back, and England capitalized before half-time. Jude Bellingham produced a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past two defenders inside the penalty area before calmly finishing to restore parity.

Thomas Tuchel made significant tactical changes at the start of the second half, replacing full-backs Nico O'Reilly and Ezri Konsa with fresh legs in Djed Spence and Morgan Rogers to inject greater pace down the flanks. Despite the substitutions, the contest remained evenly balanced. Both sides created opportunities, with Norway arguably enjoying the better chances, but neither could find the decisive goal during normal time as the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

England struck early in extra time. Morgan Rogers unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box that was parried by the Norwegian goalkeeper. Jude Bellingham reacted quickest to the rebound, tapping home his second goal of the night to put England ahead.

Soon afterwards, Djed Spence made a dangerous run into the Norwegian penalty area and appeared to be brought down by a defender. The referee initially pointed to the spot, only for the decision to be overturned following a VAR review, sparing Norway from conceding a third goal.

In the end, England advanced not through overwhelming superiority but by making the decisive moments count. While they secured their place in the semi-finals, the Three Lions looked physically fatigued for large periods of the contest. Should Argentina emerge as their next opponents, England may find themselves under far greater pressure if they produce a similar performance.

Yet an England-Argentina World Cup semi-final is never just another football match. It carries history, emotion and rivalry stretching back to 1986—the year of Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God." If that meeting materializes once again, it promises to be another chapter in one of football's greatest rivalries.
