Does turning 40 automatically mean slowing down? Does age inevitably catch up with every athlete?
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha provided the perfect answer on the grandest stage of all.
Throughout the match, the veteran shot-stopper produced at least seven or eight crucial saves, delivering a goalkeeping masterclass that shattered the myth that life begins to wind down after 40.

Medical science has a term for one of the common conditions associated with ageing: presbyopia. Typically affecting people over 40, it makes it increasingly difficult to focus on nearby objects. Many jokingly refer to it as the inevitable sign of entering middle age.
But while presbyopia may affect vision, it clearly had no impact on Vozinha’s reflexes, determination, or courage.
At 40 years old, the Cape Verde goalkeeper stood tall between the posts, using his gloves and lion-hearted mentality to frustrate Spain time and again. His performance became the defining story of a historic night.
When the final whistle blew, Vozinha was in tears. But these were not tears of disappointment. They were tears of pride, relief, and fulfilment.

For most people crossing the age of 40, reading a newspaper often means holding it farther away. Yet throughout the entire match, Vozinha looked anything but a man battling the limitations of age. Instead, he transformed himself into an impenetrable wall, making save after save and proving that passion and commitment can often outperform conventional expectations.
His international journey began on September 8, 2012, when he made his debut against Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Since then, he has represented Cape Verde more than 80 times, but the opportunity to play on football’s biggest stage had remained elusive.
There came a point when he thought his time was up. Retirement seemed inevitable. The gloves and boots he cherished so dearly appeared destined for a quiet corner of a cupboard.
Football, however, had a different script prepared for him.
Coming out of near-retirement, Vozinha’s 82nd international appearance became the most memorable match of his career. Before kick-off, even he might not have imagined that his World Cup debut—and Cape Verde’s—would become one of the greatest moments in the nation’s football history.
For Cape Verde and its football-loving people, this was more than just a victory. It was a night of dreams fulfilled, a night wrapped in emotion and national pride. Across the country, supporters celebrated wildly, singing, dancing, and embracing the historic achievement.
At the final whistle, teammates surrounded Vozinha, hugging him as tears flowed freely. Watching him in that moment, it was difficult to believe this was the same fiercely aggressive goalkeeper who had spent the previous 90 minutes dismantling Spain’s dominance and inspiring one of football’s greatest underdog stories.
