xtratime web desk: After Mexico had already exited the tournament, fellow host nation the United States has now booked its place in the knockout stage. Mauricio Pochettino’s side recorded their second consecutive victory, defeating Australia 2-0 in front of a passionate home crowd.
Just as they did in their emphatic 4-1 win over Paraguay, the Americans started on the front foot and quickly took control of the match. Their early pressure paid off when Australia defender Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous pass from Folarin Balogun.
Australia showed more fight after the break, but the United States continued to dominate possession and create the better chances. In the 64th minute, the hosts doubled their lead when Alex Freeman headed home from a loose ball that fell kindly after Sergiño Dest’s deflected effort.
Although Australia pushed forward in the closing stages, they struggled to break down the American defense. The standout performer at the back was Chris Richards, who delivered a commanding display. While Tim Ream wore the captain’s armband, Richards was the driving force in organizing the defense, using his pace, confidence, and aerial ability to repeatedly frustrate Australia’s attack.
Even when the United States dropped deeper in the second half, Richards remained composed and won several key challenges. His contribution was crucial in helping the team keep a clean sheet.
Nearly 60,000 fans at Lumen Field celebrated wildly at the final whistle. The match also featured a rare incident late on when referee Felix Zwayer appeared to suffer a hamstring cramp and briefly sat down on the pitch. He was able to continue after receiving assistance from his colleagues.
With the victory, Pochettino’s men have secured qualification for the knockout rounds with six points from their opening two matches. The United States will face Turkey in their final group-stage fixture.
