Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI Future Hangs in the Balance as Axar Patel Moves Ahead
Ravindra Jadeja’s place in India’s ODI plans is facing growing uncertainty, with the veteran all-rounder seemingly no longer guaranteed a place in the team’s first-choice combination ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Xtratime Webdesk: Ravindra Jadeja’s place in India’s ODI plans is facing growing uncertainty, with the veteran all-rounder seemingly no longer guaranteed a place in the team’s first-choice combination ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The biggest factor behind the change is Axar Patel’s rise. India now appear increasingly comfortable with Axar as their preferred left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder, creating a direct challenge for Jadeja’s position in the white-ball setup.
That shift has prompted former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara to question whether Jadeja has already reached the end of his ODI journey. Pujara believes India may no longer be looking at the 37-year-old as part of their plans for white-ball cricket, raising the possibility that his final ODI appearance may already have come. However, there is another way of looking at Jadeja’s situation.
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar does not believe the door should necessarily be considered closed. While Axar may currently hold the advantage, Nayar feels Jadeja could remain an important option on the sidelines, particularly if India loses their first-choice all-rounder to injury or unavailability.
That distinction could become crucial as India build towards the 2027 World Cup. Jadeja may no longer be viewed as an automatic starter, but his experience, bowling control and ability to contribute with the bat and in the field still provide India with valuable depth. The debate, therefore, is less about Jadeja suddenly losing his value and more about where he fits into India’s evolving ODI structure.
With Axar strengthening his position, Jadeja’s role could shift from being a regular starter to an experienced reserve. Whether that transition becomes a temporary phase or marks the final chapter of his ODI career remains one of India’s key selection questions before the 2027 World Cup.
