From BFC Blue to India Blue: Ryan Williams Set for Special Kanteerava Homecoming

Xtratime Webdesk: The Sree Kanteerava Stadium has been Ryan Williams’ home in Indian football. On Friday, it will witness a moment unlike any other in his journey as the Bengaluru FC winger steps onto the same pitch, this time wearing the India jersey against Panama.

The Bengaluru FC winger is set to make his first appearance for the national team at his club home when the Blue Tigers take on Panama in their opening game of a packed international window. For Williams, it will be much more than another international fixture. It will be a full-circle moment at the stadium where he has made his mark in Indian football.

Williams made his international debut for India in March this year and has already earned two caps, scoring once. He will now be hoping to add another appearance to his international record when India begin a challenging three-match international window.

For the 32-year-old, playing at Kanteerava in India colours will be a particularly emotional occasion.

“It’s going to be special in every way, shape and form. I started my Indian footballing career here in Bangalore, and who would have thought three years ago that I would have been pulling on the jersey for India. It’s amazing. It’s a real full-circle moment,” Williams said.

The Panama clash will be followed by two high-profile encounters in Kolkata, with India taking on Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6. All three opponents featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, providing India with a strong test under head coach Khalid Jamil.

Williams believes the extended three-week camp could prove equally important. Unlike the usual 10-day international window, India have more time together to work on their plans and build understanding.

“Usually it’s 10 days, but we have three weeks together, which is valuable time for us to connect more, get the ideas from the coach and try different things in training,” he said.

The Bengaluru FC star is looking forward to testing himself against some of world football’s biggest names, while also using the matches as a learning experience.

“Three massive games that are obviously a huge test for us. But that’s what we want. That’s what we’re after to see how these bigger teams do it, what we can take from these games, see how much we can learn and see how we use them going forward,” Williams added.

For Williams, however, Friday’s Panama clash will carry an added significance.

“I’m extremely excited to play at the Kanteerava. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of fans from BFC, and obviously of India as well,” he said.
