One of the major attractions of the meet was Asian Championships silver medallist Harmilan Bains, who entered the women's 5,000m race as one of the favourites. Expectations were high for the star athlete, but Maharashtra's Sanjivani Baburao Yadav produced a stunning performance to claim the top spot.

Running with impressive rhythm and consistency, Sanjivani clocked 16 minutes 47.16 seconds to secure the gold medal. Harmilan, despite a strong effort, had to settle for the silver medal.
