England have been dealt a significant setback just before the start of their World Cup campaign, with Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been called up as his replacement.
Livramento suffered a calf injury during a training session on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for approximately six weeks. The setback has ended his hopes of featuring in the World Cup, prompting England to make a late change to their squad.
In an official statement, the Football Association (FA) confirmed that Chalobah is set to join the England camp in Kansas City.
“Arrangements are being made for the Chelsea defender to join the squad at its base camp in Kansas City. The rest of the squad will travel to Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday for their opening group-stage match against Croatia,” the FA said.
The FA also noted that FIFA regulations allow teams to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their first match of the tournament.
The injury is being viewed as a major setback for England manager Thomas Tuchel. Livramento’s versatility had made him an important option, as he is capable of playing on both the right and left flanks as a full-back.
The 22-year-old had only recently returned to action after missing the final two months of the season with a thigh injury. He featured in the second half of England’s 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Florida but remained an unused substitute in the team's final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica.
Meanwhile, Chalobah has made just one senior appearance for England. He earned his debut in June 2025 during a 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Although he was included in the squad for the final two World Cup qualifying matches in November that year, he did not feature in either game.
The Chelsea defender enjoyed an impressive club season, making 34 Premier League appearances and scoring three goals. He will now have the opportunity to contribute on the biggest stage as England prepare to begin their World Cup journey.
