Iran kicked off their World Cup campaign with a spirited 2-2 draw against New Zealand, fighting back twice after falling behind. While the battle on the pitch was intense, there was also a palpable sense of tension off it, as Iran played under a cloud of political and social sensitivities in a heavily secured environment.

The match was held at the spectacular SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, one of the most impressive venues of the tournament. Reaching the stadium from the city was surprisingly convenient. Although the metro journey required three line changes, volunteers were stationed at every stop to guide fans. From the airport station, shuttle buses transported spectators directly to the stadium. The entire trip cost just $6.

The stadium itself is an architectural marvel. Its ground level is equivalent to a three-story structure, with two additional levels above and two more below ground. The playing field is actually situated two levels beneath the surface. Due to restrictions on building height near the airport, engineers created the venue by excavating a massive pit, resulting in one of the most innovative stadium designs in the world.

Iranian supporters dominated the stands, creating a vibrant atmosphere despite the tension surrounding the match. A significant number of Mexican fans were also present. Given Los Angeles' proximity to Mexico and its large Mexican community, many local supporters attended the game, with a surprising number cheering for Iran.

Security around the stadium was highly visible, with a large presence of police officers and security personnel. However, the screening process itself was relatively smooth. Fans were required to carry transparent plastic bags, and sealed water bottles were permitted inside. Cigarettes and lighters were allowed, although smoking was strictly prohibited within the stadium premises.

Most of the Iranian supporters in attendance were members of the diaspora. Some were residents of the United States, while others had traveled from countries such as Canada. Due to visa complications and the current political situation, very few fans had been able to travel directly from Iran.

Another striking sight in the stands was the number of supporters carrying a flag that is not the current national flag of Iran. Instead, many displayed the pre-Islamic Revolution flag, which remains a symbol of identity and nostalgia for sections of the Iranian diaspora.

Outside the stadium, demonstrations in support of Palestine also drew attention. Upon learning that visitors had traveled from India to watch the match, several fans expressed their excitement. When told that Iran was the team being supported, Iranian fans warmly responded: “We are all Asians, and we should stand by one another.”

That sense of camaraderie and warmth, amid the tension and spectacle of the World Cup, became one of the most memorable moments of the journey.
