In a thrilling Group E clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ecuador pulled off a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over Germany, taking a giant step towards securing a place in the knockout stage.

Germany started the match on the front foot, matching Ecuador's pace with their trademark intensity. The four-time world champions took an early lead when Leroy Sané found the back of the net after a bright opening spell.

However, Ecuador responded almost immediately. Young forward Nilson Angulo restored parity just minutes later, finishing off a well-worked move to bring the South American side back into the contest.

Both teams created several chances for the remainder of the first half, but neither could find another breakthrough as the match went into the interval locked at 1-1.

Ecuador gradually took control after the restart, increasing the pressure on Germany's defence with quick attacks and impressive technical play. Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata finished a superb attacking move to put Ecuador 2-1 ahead.

Germany pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages. Deep into stoppage time, Deniz Undav came close to rescuing a point, but his effort struck the side netting, allowing Ecuador to hold on for a memorable victory.

The win takes Ecuador to four points in Group E, leaving them on the verge of qualifying for the Round of 16. In the group's other match, Ivory Coast defeated Curaçao 2-0 to climb into second place. Despite the defeat, Germany remain at the top of the group.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among Ecuador's players, coaching staff, and supporters. The victory not only earned them three valuable points but also brought them within touching distance of a historic place in the knockout rounds.

For Germany, however, the defeat has raised fresh concerns. Although they are still on course to qualify as group leaders, the match exposed defensive frailties and a lack of control in midfield—issues they will need to address before the knockout stage.
