Xtratime Web Desk: Japan and Sweden booked their places in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after playing out a 1-1 draw in a thrilling Group F encounter at AT&T Stadium in Texas. Both sides displayed attacking intent throughout the match, but neither could find a decisive winner.
Japan dominated possession from the opening whistle, consistently putting Sweden under pressure with their crisp passing and fluid attacking play. Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 59th minute when Daizen Maeda broke the deadlock.
The goal came from a brilliant through ball by Ritsu Doan, allowing Maeda to calmly slot the ball past Swedish goalkeeper Jennifer Zetterström. It was a well-deserved reward for Japan's impressive attacking display.
The warning signs had been there moments earlier. A slick passing move involving Ayase Ueda, Doan, and Maeda carved open the Swedish defence before Maeda controlled the ball with one touch and finished clinically with his next.
However, Sweden responded almost immediately. Just five minutes later, Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga produced a moment of individual brilliance to level the score. Cutting inside from the right flank, Elanga curled a superb left-footed strike beyond the reach of Japan goalkeeper Suzuki, restoring parity at 1-1.
It was a finish of the highest quality, with Elanga showcasing the kind of composure and technique needed to beat the Japanese shot-stopper.
The draw saw Japan finish second in Group F with five points, while Sweden advanced as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams with four points. In the group's other match, the Netherlands defeated Tunisia 3-1 to top the standings with seven points.
Both teams fought fiercely until the final whistle, creating several chances in an entertaining contest. Sweden came closest to snatching a late winner, but Japan goalkeeper Suzuki produced a series of outstanding saves to preserve the draw.
Deep into stoppage time, Suzuki denied Alexander Isak's powerful header before making another excellent stop to keep out Elanga's fierce effort, ensuring Japan avoided defeat.
As Group F winners, the Netherlands will face Morocco in the Round of 16.
Japan, who finished runners-up in the group, are set for a blockbuster knockout clash against Brazil, one of the standout fixtures of the next round.
Meanwhile, Sweden have also progressed to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, with their opponent yet to be confirmed.
