xtratime Web Desk: Germany have been dealt a significant setback after one of their most dependable defenders, Nico Schlotterbeck, was ruled out of the remainder of the FIFA World Cup due to a serious injury.
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back has suffered a severe ligament injury in his left ankle and will be sidelined for several months, according to his club. As a result, Schlotterbeck will play no further part in Germany’s World Cup campaign.
Schlotterbeck picked up the injury during Germany’s match against Ivory Coast following a collision with opposition winger Amad Diallo. Despite the setback, the defender showed remarkable determination by continuing to play until the end of the first half, earning praise from Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Speaking after the match, Nagelsmann had expressed concern over the defender’s condition.
"We have to wait for the MRI results, but unfortunately it doesn’t look very good," Nagelsmann said. "The way he fought on until half-time was truly admirable. He was prepared to give everything for the team."
The fears were confirmed on Sunday following further medical examinations, which revealed significant ligament damage. While Schlotterbeck’s tournament is over, he will remain with the German squad in the United States throughout the competition.
Reacting to the news, Nagelsmann said: "We will miss ‘Schlotti’ enormously on the pitch. He is an outstanding defender and particularly valuable in building play from the back. This World Cup could have been something very special for him. We are all trying to keep his spirits up, but he is a very positive person."
The German coach also highlighted the depth available in his defensive unit despite the loss.
"It is positive that Schlotti will stay with the team. He also has an influence off the pitch. Even in his absence, we have experienced defenders such as Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton and Malick Thiaw available."
Schlotterbeck’s injury comes at a crucial stage of the tournament and represents a major blow to Germany’s ambitions. However, Nagelsmann and his team will now look to rely on their defensive depth as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
