Raunak Ghosh: Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was the wall the stood between heaven and hell for the Iranian national team. He has been one of the team's pillars for a long time but behind all of these heroics, lie very humble beginnings.
Beiranvand was born into a nomadic family in Iran's Lorestan province. Herding sheep across the mountains was his daily routine but that didn't stop him from dreaming of becoming a footballer, yet the path to realizing that dream was incredibly arduous.
In his teens, he left home for Tehran with the goal of becoming a professional footballer. Life there was a constant struggle; he sometimes had to sleep under the open sky and took on various odd jobs—washing cars, working in garment factories and pizza shops, and even street cleaning—just to survive.

Yet, he never abandoned his dream. Interestingly, Beiranvand was not originally a goalkeeper; he used to play as a striker. One day, he stepped in between the goalposts out of necessity for the team, and that decision changed his life forever.
He went on to become Iran's number-one goalkeeper, captained the national team, represented his country in multiple World Cups, and delivered one of the most memorable moments in Iranian football history by saving a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2018 World Cup.
Today, he is one of the most experienced players on the Iranian squad. His brilliant goalkeeping against Belgium once again proved that with hard work, patience, and an indomitable spirit, even the impossible can be achieved.
Alireza Beiranvand is more than just a goalkeeper today—he is a symbol of struggle, perseverance, and hope for millions of Iranians.
It seems that the current edition of the World Cup is scripting a unique history for veteran goalkeepers. Beiranvand is no exception.
